This is of course a standard EU-inspired law. Latvia’s first official move to criminalize certain statements about the past also followed the EU recommendations. In May 2009, Latvia amended its Penal Code by introducing the following article:

For a person who commits public glorification of genocide, crime against humanity, crime against peace or war crime or public denial or acquittal of implemented genocide, crime against humanity, crime against peace or war crime – the applicable punishment is deprivation of liberty for a term of not exceeding five years.121
